Things to do at Cabo Girão

Cabo Girão is a basalt cliff of roughly 580 metres, among the highest sea cliffs in Europe, on the coast road above Câmara de Lobos, about a 15-minute drive west of Funchal. The skywalk, a glass-floored platform cantilevered over the drop, opened in 2012 and costs nothing to visit.

It sits directly above the fajã, the narrow terraced plots of bananas and vines worked at sea level, which is the real reason to come: few viewpoints on the island put you this high above land still being farmed.

There's a car park and a bus stop right by the entrance, so no walking is required, but the platform is small and can turn crowded by mid-morning in July and August, and management closes it in high wind.
