Things to do on the PR1 Arieiro–Ruivo traverse

The Vereda do Arieiro is Madeira's signature hike: roughly 7 km one-way between the Pico do Arieiro (1,818 m) and the Pico Ruivo (1,862 m), the island's two highest points, threaded through three unlit tunnels and staircases cut straight into the basalt. Most walkers need 3 to 4 hours in one direction, longer with the side trip to the summit.

The classic version starts before dawn, with cars leaving Funchal around 4-5am to reach the ridge for sunrise, often above a cloud sea while it sits close to 0°C at altitude, against 18°C or so down at sea level.

A head torch and warm layers are not optional here, and every guide worth using checks the forecast before setting a start time, since fog can close the ridge with little warning.
