Things to do in Camacha

Camacha sits on the plateau above Funchal's eastern approach, a working village of terraced fields rather than a coastal stop. It is roughly 30 minutes by car from Funchal, and the altitude shows: expect temperatures 3-4 degrees cooler than the Lido seafront, with cloud drifting across the terraces by mid-afternoon even when the coast is clear.

The drive follows the old route towards Machico and Canico before the motorway tunnels bypassed it, so the village kept its unhurried, agricultural rhythm rather than becoming a resort stop.

There is little in the way of paid attractions or set opening hours here; this is a place for slowing down among vegetable plots, vine-covered pergolas and stone terraces stacked up the hillside, with the odd cafe serving strong coffee to farmers between plots rather than to tour groups.
