Things to do in Câmara de Lobos
Câmara de Lobos is a working fishing harbour barely ten minutes by car or taxi from Funchal, not a remote outpost — treat it as an easy half-day out rather than an expedition. The colourful boats and blue-and-yellow houses around the port are the draw, along with the spot where Winston Churchill set up his easel in January 1950; a small plaque marks the view he painted.
Bars along the waterfront serve poncha the traditional way, made with aguardente de cana, honey and lemon and stirred with a wooden caralhinho — order pescador if you want the citrus original rather than a fruit-syrup version aimed at day-trippers. A taxi from Funchal centre runs roughly 10-15 euros one way; by bus it takes about 20-30 minutes.
Expect around 20-24°C on a summer afternoon by the harbour wall.
