Things to do at the Madeira Botanical Garden
The Madeira Botanical Garden (Jardim Botanico da Madeira) sits on a hillside above Funchal, reached by road or by cable car link from the Monte gondola, roughly 15-20 minutes from the city centre.
It is not the same place as the Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro: that is a separate, more English and more private garden elsewhere near Funchal, and the two are confused constantly in guides. This one is a public botanical collection of tropical and endemic plants, terraced above the bay, with wide views over the harbour.
Entry runs a few euros per adult, and most visitors need one to two hours to cover the main terraces without rushing. Buses from Funchal centre stop nearby; parking is limited, so arriving by bus or taxi is usually easier than driving.
